News Update No. 26

AFRICA
AFRICA has been dominating the news for weeks with the Live 8 concerts, the G8 Summit and the Make Poverty History campaign. The coverage on radio and TV has been incredible - Africa is being exposed as never before. But how can we portray in one word, Africa, a picture of over 50 nations and lands so varied, so breathtakingly beautiful, so rich and yet so needy? Certainly all the recent events should help us to understand a little better tha amazing countries that make up this vast continent. At BOOK AID it has had the effect of making us keener than ever to be part of the re-making of Africa. Our motto of 'Aid through Trade leading to Development' seems to be in keeping with what most commentators believe is the best way to help. So we press on with the ministry God has called us to and trust that great books in the hands of the right people will influence each nation for good. Keep the books flowing to us and we will endeavour to do our part in getting them to the right places.

BOOK AID MOVES INTO BROMLEY HOUSE
For some years now as Book Aid has continued to expand we have been fighting a losing battle in our London premises - trying to cope with an increasing flow of books, both in and out. We searched for a more suitable building for about six years and had our hopes raised and dashed several times. This time God has done wonderful things for us, and a property, BROMLEY HOUSE, in South East London, is now ours. Rejoice with us that this has been possible - all sorts of answers to prayer came together allowing us to purchase this place. The move from our 'home' at Grove Park seemed formidable but helpers arrived just at the right time to move mountains of books and shelving, etc. - a big 'thank you' to them all. In this new place we will be able to resume shipping containers from London once more (as well as from Ranskill) and we hope to be able to satisfy many more hungry readers in Africa and around the world.

A TERRIBLE THING IN THE PHILIPPINES
Roger and Naeda West (ex-Book Aid helpers in London) who began a ministry in the Greater Manila area a year ago are still very encouraged at the response they are seeing. As well as taking books into Bible Colleges and Seminaries they recently began a 'Books into Churches' experiment when they sent thirteen consignments into various churches with very good results - 1521 books were sold! One church notably took every book in the consignment, all 320 of them! Also, a new 'Books on Wheels' effort, with four other people involved, is getting books into the urban areas in Metro Manila and into the Provinces.

Roger writes of a keen customer, Bob Berredo, who phoned him: "Hello, I'm pastoring a small church and lecturing at a Bible College in Cavite. I just want to let you know that a TERRIBLE THING happened to me yesterday. I wandered into the lobby of the college and found on the table just a handful of the books you had brought for sale. The rest were gone and I need them so much for my lecturing and pastoral ministries!" A keen customer indeed! "In fact Bob has brought over 100 of our books" writes Roger

BAG FULLS OF BOOKS IN NORTH GHANA
In 2002, whilst working in Ghana, John Cartledge saw the appalling lack of Christian books in the north and felt God was prompting him to provide a Ministry Book Centre for the people. He contacted Book Aid for help and a container load of books was sent to him. After a lot of hard work a Christian bookstore has been opened in Tamale and Christians are now rejoicing that their prayers of many years have been answered. John says young pastors take out books by the bag-full, as if there would never be any more. Before this store was opened they had to make a round trip to Accra of nearly 900 km and, even there, not many Christian books were to be found at prices people could afford. Not afraid of hard work, John is hoping to open another store, in the extreme north-east, on the Burkino Faso border.

MOZAMBIQUE -
"Whilst working as a missionary in Mozambique I was a regular visitor to the Scripture Union shop in the city of Mutare (Zimbabwe). I was greatly blessed by being able to get good Christian books. It was a joy to spend time looking through boxes, often with better books than were on the shelves. Not having much money I was blessed to get good books at a fraction of the cost and I could pass them on. Most went through many hands! Very many thanks."
